How do braces work?
During your free consultation, our team will collect a model of your mouth, digital X-rays and photos before putting your braces on. One of our family orthodontists will then use this data to create a customized treatment plan to determine how he places your brackets based on your particular orthodontic needs. This plan will include information about how each tooth needs to move to achieve optimal positioning.
Once metal or clear brackets have been attached to your teeth using a special orthodontic glue, we will insert a wire through them to provide customized pressure to move your teeth to the correct positions. Through remodeling, bends in the wire will encourage precise teeth movements. This process involves minor changes in the bone surrounding the roots of teeth. When your braces put pressure on a tooth, cells called osteoblasts and osteoclasts form around the root. Together with the wire, this creates negative pressure on one side of the tooth and removes the bone parts. On the other side of the tooth, the bone gets reformed. This pressure and bone remodeling slowly move teeth into the correct position.
Remodeling can only occur if your braces put constant pressure on your tooth. Teeth will often begin drifting over time toward their old positions once we remove your braces. Fortunately, regularly wearing a retainer can prevent your teeth from drifting and will keep your teeth in their new and improved positions!
